VARAGU ARISI PARUPPU SADHAM / KODO MILLET LENTIL MEDLEY

Arisi paruppu sadam is a special dish from Kongu  region of South India. Kongu foods has more of coconut and pulses in many dishes and most of the recipes were made using freshly ground spices.This is very simple dish to try and make a perfect meal.I have prepared this arisi paruppu sadham with varagu rice / kodo millet instead of our regular rice. Varagu rice is much healthier than our regular rice.

This is a wholesome dish and a perfect one pot meal that does not need any elaborate cooking process.

INGREDIENTS     
Varagu arisi [kodo millet]                         – 1  cup
Toor dal                                                           – 1/4 cup
Small onions finely chopped                   -1 cup
Tomato finely chopped                             - 1 no
Turmeric powder                                        - ¼ tsp
 Water                                                             – 2 cups
Salt                                                                    -to taste





INGREDIENTS FOR GRINDING

Garlic                               - 4 cloves
Dry Red Chilly             –4nos
Curry leaves                – few
Cumin seeds               – 1/2 tsp
Fennel seeds                - ½ tsp
Black Pepper Corns  - 1/4 tsp

Grind the above ingredients coarsely.

FOR SEASONING
     
Oil                         –1 tbsp
Mustard seeds     - 1 tsp
Red chillies           - 2 nos


FOR GARNISHING
Cashews fried in ghee                 - few






METHOD

Wash varagu rice and dal. Heat oil in a pressure cooker & add mustard seeds to it and allow it to splutter and add red chillies.
Add the onions and fry until golden brown and add chopped tomatoes to it and fry till the tomatoes are mushy.
Then add the ground paste to it and fry till the raw smell goes.
Add rice and dal to it and add water, turmeric powder  and required salt
Pressure cook for 2 or 3 whistles.
Garnish it with fried cashews.
Varagu arisi paruppu sadham is ready to serve.
Serve hot with potato chips.
