Dals are considered to be a staple food .For vegetarians dal is the one of the protein source. This spicy and tasty mixed dal tomato in coconut gravy gives a nice aroma and taste. We can have it for lunch and also for breakfast.
Mixed dals - 1 cup
(Channa Dal, Tuvar dal, Moong dal, urad dal & masoor dal)Tomato - -3 nos
Turmeric - 1/2 tsp
salt - to taste
FOR WET GRINDING
Coconut -1/2 cup
Garlic - 3 cloves(optional)
Green chillies - 8 nos
Clove - 2 nos
Cinnamon - 1 inch piece
Star Anise - 1 no
Grind the above ingredients to a smooth paste.
Oil - 1 tbsp
Fennel seeds - 1 tsp
Red chillies - 2 nos
Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Pressure cook dals with enough water and turmeric powder.
Heat oil in a pan, and add fennel seeds, red chillies, curry leaves and tomatoes.
Sauté the tomatoes for a while and add the cooked dals.
Add salt, and ground coconut paste. Mix well , add some more water to get desired consistency,and cook in a medium flame till the raw smell of gravy disappears, or for five to ten minutes.
Serve hot with Thavalai dosa, idiyappam, appam, etc.
