SAMAI RICE / SMALL MILLET SPICY MASALA KOZHUKKATTAI


Samai arisi / small millet kozhukattai is a healthy dumpling. Millets are high in minerals like iron, magnesium etc. So, I made dumplings with millet instead of rice .for breakfast.Another uniqueness in this dumpling is the rava is boiled in coconut onion masala.. so there is no need of any accompaniments for this kozukkattai.if you want you can have with sambar or chutney.








INGREDIENTS
Samai rice /small  Millet – 1 cup
Toovar dhal                         - ½ cup
Water                                  – 3 cups

Salt                                 -to taste

FOR SEASONING

Coconut oil                              - 1 tsp
Gingelly oil                              - 1 tsp
Sunflower oil                           - 1 tsp

Mustard Seeds                        – 1 tsp
Channa Dal/bengal gram     - 2 tbsp
Curry leaves                               -1 sprig 
Asafoetida                                – 1/4 tsp

INGREDIENTS FOR GRINDING

Small onions                             - 6 nos
Red chillies                               - 5 nos
Grated coconut                        - 4 tbsps
Grind the above ingredients to a smooth paste and keep aside. 








METHOD
  
Wash rice well, drain the water completely and spread over a cloth.
Wash and soak toovar dal for half an hour.
Drain the water, spread over a cloth and powder into rava in a blender or in a mixer.
Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds and when it crackles add Bengal gram, curry leaves, asafoetida and saute till it turns golden brown. Then add water,salt and ground coconut onion paste and bring it to boil. 
When it starts boiling add the coarsely powdered rice dal rawa mixture.Stir continuously from the bottom , adding the remaining finely grated coconut.
When all the water is absorbed cook for few more minutes at a lower flame .
Remove from fire and allow it to cool for sometime .
Make oval sized balls and steam for fifteen minutes .
Yummy samai spicy masala  kozhukkattais are ready to serve.
Serve hot with sambar or chutney .
